Under the Tuscan Sun

I've been really bad about keeping up with blogging, between midterms and other trips, so this post is about a trip in October. I went to Tuscany with my study abroad program.  We took a bus to Siena, which is the main place that we stayed in Tuscany.

On the first day, we went on a walking tour of Siena. My favorite parts of the city were the Siena Cathedral and the Piazza del Campo. The piazza is famous for the Palio di Siena, the horse races held there every summer. In this race, each neighborhood in Siena has its own racer. Everyone in the city comes to watch and the piazza is packed with people. There is no prize, simply the pride of winning for your neighborhood.

The next day we went to the town of Montalcino, known for its special Brunello wine. I'm not a big fan of red wine, but in order to get a true Montalcino experience, we decided to do a wine tasting at Enoteca la Fortezza di Montalcino. We tried two types of Brunello wine, one from 2007 and one from 2009. Honestly, the two tasted pretty much the same, but I'm most definitely not a wine connoisseur.
After the wine tasting, we went to a Gregorian Abbey, where we were supposed to hear a traditional Gregorian chant. Unfortunately, something was wrong with scheduling and we didn't get to see it, but the abbey and surrounding countryside were beautiful.
On our last day in Tuscany, we stopped in Pisa before heading back to Milano. Quite honestly, we spent way too much time in Pisa. After taking the typical pictures in front of the Leaning Tower, we still had hours left to spend in Pisa. We tried to kill time by getting gelato and shopping. Unfortunately, the only shops there are tourist traps so we left Pisa with fake Ray Bans and Leaning Tower of Pisa shot glasses.
